Philosophy Provide students with the Catholic traditions and foundation to build a strong relationship with Jesus and a strong faith for which they can develop into faithfilled adults and active members of the Catholic Church.
Student Expectations Attendance: It is our goal that students attend classes every week to develop their faith and remain actively involved in the class activities. We ask that all children arrive on time and attend the entire class session. If students are tardy, they will need to check in at the office. If the student consistently misses 3 or more classes in a row, they will be contacted by the instructor or office secretary and the student will be asked to make up the missed lessons. Behavior: As with any classroom setting, we ask that students follow the classroom rules as outlined in the Christian Behavior document handed out at the first class. Part of the religious education is appropriate and kind behavior and we hope that parents stress the importance of this in order to prevent wasted time correcting a disruptive student. Parent Expectations Parent involvement is an important part of the PSR program as well as part of the parish. We encourage you to be involved in your child’s religious education and attend all dedicated masses for the program. We also feel that prayer is an important part of every home and encourage families to pray together at various times of the day such as at meals or bedtime.
We ask for parent volunteers to help keep the environment safe for the students at school by working one night as a door greeter along with ‘playground duty’. Parents can also be involved with celebrating birthdays in each classroom – sign-ups can be completed with the secretary.
Academics Students will be asked to actively participate in various learning styles for their religious education at St. Michael’s PSR program. Assessment occurs in three areas: Participation, Homework/Classroom Assignments, and Understanding of Material. A checkmark system is used as well as comments from the Catechist. Reports cards are distributed the evening of the Advent Celebration and the last class of the year. In the Religious curriculum for grade 4-8, human sexuality has been included during three class periods to encourage self respect and teach the values of the Catholic Church.
St. Michael’s also includes the “Safe Touch” Curriculum in the PSR program as part of an on-going commitment to provide safe and healthy environment for the students. This information was developed by the Archdiocesan Child Safety Committee and provide practical, helpful information to help children protect themselves from the dangers that exist today. |
