What is Christ Renews His Parish?
Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) is a spiritual renewal process designed to bring members of our parish together in Christ. Pronounced “chirp”, it is a weekend retreat that stresses a clear focus on the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ through scripture study, prayer, the sacraments and fellowship with members of our parish community. The process emphasizes continued growth in Christian life and in our relationships with each other.
CHRP offers an opportunity to step back from daily life and re-examine our Christian, Catholic commitment to the teachings of Jesus. It is for anyone seeking spiritual renewal and an opportunity to deepen their faith and sense of purpose within the parish community.
The renewal weekends are open to all St. Michael the Archangel parishioners and others who live in our parish’s boundaries who are at least 19 years of age. There will be one weekend for women and one for men.
The renewal weekend is given for our parishioners by parishioners at the parish. The retreat team is trained and formed so as to share this weekend with you. This retreat weekend is a recurring spiritual event.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary. – Isaiah 40:30-31
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. – 2 Corinthians 4:16
What happens during the renewal weekend?
This is an opportunity to hear and discuss how we live as Catholics in our modern society.
It is an occasion for individual spiritual growth through prayer and personal reflection. You may share your faith stories (as much or as little as you want) with others in the parish that are as challenged as you with the many demands of everyday life.
Sacraments are part of the weekend with the celebration of Mass as well as the opportunity to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation / Confession during the weekend.
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God. – Colossians1:9-10
What CRHP is not…
…a silent retreat.
…a parish organization.
…a public confession.
…a pre-selected group.
Here are some personal accounts of parishioners’
experiences with CRHP at St. Michael’s:
“When I first heard about CRHP last year, I was only half-hearted about going because I have so much on my plate now, and I saw the whole CRHP journey as a challenge to my busy life. Gratefully, I was open enough to listen to the invitation of the Holy Spirit and realize that CRHP was not "one more thing I am doing for my parish", but something I did for myself. Through this experience (the retreat and the time following) I have strengthened my prayer life and relationship with Jesus. This strength gives me peace and confidence to handle anything else life throws my way. The bonus is that I've gotten to know some people in my parish I would not have connected with under normal circumstances, since we come from such varied walks of life. I'm especially grateful for these new friendships, and for the strengthening of the relationships I already had with others who are also part of my CRHP experience.” -CRHP Participant
“I always considered myself to be a pretty good Catholic. I went to church on Sundays and tried my best to follow the commandments. I felt deep in my heart, though, that something was missing. While participating in the February 2010 CRHP retreat, “it” happened. For the first time in my life, I really, truly met Jesus. I was aware of His presence with us that weekend, and I have felt His presence with me ever since. Because of my newfound friendship with Jesus, I’ve become a better wife, mother and friend. If you don’t have a close relationship with Jesus and want one, or if you have one and you wish to strengthen it, you have got to attend the next CRHP retreat! It will change your life!" -CRHP Participant
“Why CRHP? In this world in which we all have control over how every aspect of our lives can turn out: we can help extend our earthly lives more and more as there are advances in healthcare; we can pay for psychologists that can help us deal with the hurts of the past; we can entertain ourselves with TV, games, and anything we can get our hands on; we can surgically enhance/reduce body parts as we wish; the list goes on and on. While all these things, in themselves, are not bad things, we can get caught up being able to control every aspect of our lives. We are, however, reminded, especially when tragedy strikes, that we are not as much in control of this life as we thought that we were. CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) is a chance for us to be in touch with a God that remains constant through all the ups and downs of life. CRHP allows for us to be in touch with those other people around us that struggle with the same difficulties of keeping faith in that God. CRHP allows for us to find that our faith is one that can move mountains and can make anything possible.” -CRHP Participant
